Discount Armageddon (InCryptid #1) by Seanan McGuire

Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night… The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she’d rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right? It would be, if it weren’t for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family’s old enemies, the Covenant of St. George. When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed. To complicate matter further, local cryptids are disappearing, strand lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone’s spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping under the city…

My Thoughts:

I was a little hesitant to read this book. It seemed like it would be a bit more into the Fantasy genre than I normally read. Turns out it was a mostly seated in the Urban Fantasy group. As in a lot of Urban Fantasy books, there’s a kick butt character and a decent amount of action. Verity is one of the main characters and she has been raised to know how to protect herself. It’s a good thing too because she gets into some awkward and dangerous situations.

There was also a vast array of paranormal creatures/people (aka cyptid’s) in this book. It was a lot to keep strait but overall I enjoyed the variety. My favorite cryptid was the boogeyman! He was so spooky when he played his boogeyman games!

Let me know what you think of this book if you’ve read it!
